Therapy for adoption-related trauma
What is adoption-competent therapy?
Being an adoption-competent therapist is about more than possessing the necessary knowledge, understanding, and specialized skills. It's about recognizing and addressing the unique emotional, psychological, and relational dynamics that can arise in adoption-related experiences.
As both a therapist and a transracial Latine adoptee who continues to navigate my own reunion journey, I bring firsthand understanding to the complexities of adoption. This dual perspective—professional training combined with lived experience—allows me to provide empathic and supportive guidance, acknowledging and validating the specific needs and challenges faced by adoptees throughout their adoption journey.
You’ve already taken your first step.
adoption-related trauma
You can learn to heal.
Adoption-related trauma is a profound and unique experience that can deeply impact the lives of adoptees. It encompasses the emotional and psychological challenges stemming from the separation from biological families, loss of original identity, and the complex journey of forming new attachments.
Adoption often creates a unique experience of existing between multiple worlds—biological and adoptive families, birth culture and raised culture, known and unknown histories… This liminal space can create both challenges and strengths, manifesting as feelings of grief, identity struggles, a sense of not belonging, and complex relationship dynamics.
As a therapist specializing in working with adopted individuals, I understand the depths of these experiences and the transformative potential of healing. Together, we will embark on a compassionate and empowering journey of self-discovery, helping you navigate the complexities of your adoption story, heal from past wounds, and integrate the various aspects of your story into a more cohesive sense of self. Your voice matters, and I am here to provide a safe and understanding space where we can explore, heal, and embrace the fullness of your unique adoptee identity.
Therapy for adoption-related trauma can help you…
Feel more connected to those in your life
Understand feelings of grief
Gain a better sense of your identity
Learn to trust those you chose to be in your life
Find connections in your current actions to things that happened to you
Why Art Therapy for Adoption-Related Trauma
Art therapy offers unique benefits for addressing adoption-related trauma, particularly for experiences that occurred before language development. Relinquishment and early separation often create pre-verbal imprints that traditional talk therapy alone may struggle to access.
Through creative expression, we can:
Access early memories and feelings stored in the body that exist before and beyond language
Express complex emotions about identity and belonging that may be difficult to articulate
Create visual representations of your journey and buried emotions to help integrate fragmented aspects of your story
Safely explore grief, loss, and attachment in a contained, metaphorical space
Reconnect with cultural elements that may have been disrupted through adoption
As an adoptee, professional artist, and Board Certified Art Therapist, I use creative approaches to help navigate the unique terrain of adoption experiences, offering pathways to healing that honor all aspects of your identity and story.
Cultural Identity in Adoption
Transracial and transcultural adoption adds additional layers to the adoption experience. Beyond the universal adoption themes of loss and belonging, there's a unique complexity in navigating multiple cultural worlds simultaneously.
As a transracial Latine adoptee myself, I understand firsthand the journey of cultural identity formation when raised outside your birth culture. The questions of 'who am I?' and 'where do I belong?' take on added dimensions, influenced by physical appearance, family dynamics, racism, and access to cultural knowledge.
This cultural navigation often involves balancing appreciation for your adoptive culture with curiosity or longing for birth heritage. It can include experiences of feeling 'not enough' of either culture, or developing a unique cultural identity that exists in the spaces between defined categories.
Through cultural exploration, you can…
Understand feelings of cultural displacement without shame
Process racial/ethnic identity development in the context of adoption
Address the impact of racism, colorism, and micro-aggressions on your sense of self
Find meaningful ways to connect or reconnect with cultural heritage
Navigate relationships with birth family across cultural and language differences
Create space for grief around cultural losses while celebrating cultural strengths
