What is EMDR?

How does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful evidence-based form of therapy that can help effectively address the distressing effects of traumatic experiences and emotional difficulties. By using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or taps, EMDR facilitates the processing and integration of traumatic memories stored in the brain.

This process helps release the intensity of traumatic reactions and promotes healing. EMDR helps individuals access their internal resources, develop resilience, and create new adaptive patterns. This therapeutic approach can address the underlying beliefs, emotions, and sensations associated with trauma, leading to improved well-being, less emotional reactivity, and healthier relationships and daily life activities.

You’re ready when talk therapy isn’t helping you get to what is beneath.

emdr experience

Your body does the healing.

During an EMDR session, we engage your natural healing capacity through specific bilateral stimulation techniques - following a visual cue on screen, listening to alternating sounds, feeling gentle taps on your hands or shoulder (with a purchased device), or you tapping your thighs or shoulders. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with your nervous system to process stored memories.

As I guide you through the experience, you may notice physical sensations shifting, emotional distress decreasing (and sometimes increasing), and beliefs about yourself transforming. The process happens within you, as your body and brain work together to integrate experiences that have been stored in fragmented ways. EMDR allows you to access your internal wisdom and resilience, helping you heal from within rather than being "fixed" by external solutions.

EMDR can help you…

  • Address the preverbal trauma associated with relinquishment and early separation

  • Process feelings of in-betweenness and navigate multiple cultural or familial identities

  • Heal attachment wounds and build secure relationships with yourself and others

  • Release stored body memories that exist beyond language

  • Integrate fragmented aspects of your identity and story

  • Reduce distressing memories, anxiety, and fear responses

  • Find greater ease and emotional regulation

integrating approaches

EMDR and art therapy together.

The integration of EMDR and art therapy creates a powerful combination that engages the body, senses, and creative expression in the healing process. This approach recognizes that trauma is stored not just in our thoughts but in our bodies and sensory systems.

By incorporating bilateral stimulation with various creative modalities—movement, rhythm, mark-making, and art exploration—we can access healing on multiple levels simultaneously. This sensorimotor expressive approach helps build capacity in both body and mind, supporting integration of fragmented experiences through embodied cognition and restorative engagement.

As a Board Certified Art Therapist with EMDR training and specialized knowledge in bilateral approaches, I can help you explore healing pathways that honor both your creative capacity and your body's wisdom. This integrated approach is particularly effective for pre-verbal trauma, complex experiences, and when traditional talking methods alone feel insufficient.
